A couple of friends of mine run a website for selling taxidermy. A while ago they asked me if I would be willing to write a little column for it every month or so, about my adventures. I have posted my first one there, and now I am looking for some feedback on the story. The link is below and if you are willing I would appreciate it if you would be willing to read it and let me know what you think. Thanks. www.canadiantaxidermy.com/tobawan/tobawan.htm

Hey Rod, good to see some reports from the Parkland. I do not get up there much anymore but it is nice to see that I can get caught up on where it is hot for when I do make a journey. You are right I know exactly where your store is even though I have not been there for a few years now. I will be checking back on the reports frequently so stay caught up, especially for Duck Mountains and LoP.

Thursday April 14/04, The alarm went off at 5:00 am I had barely slept at all due to the excitement of going on a fishing trip. We were heading to Carpenters Clearwater lake lodge on Clearwater lake just north of the pas Manitoba. I had never fished for Lake Trout before and could not wait to get there. There was myself (Rod Carberry), John Boyd owner of For Your Walleyes Only Guiding service in Dauphin, and Scott Fordyce also from Dauphin. After a quick stop at Tim Hortons for a coffee we were on our way, we were to meet another 29 guys at the lodge for 3 days of steady hardwater lake trout fishing. It was shortly after noon when We arrived at the lodge to see we were the only ones there, everyone else had gone to Reed lake to try for the day. We unloaded our gear, quads, and my skidoo, I threw some bait, tackle, a dozen pepsi, my 2 rods in the box of the skidoo and off we went. We rode 1 mile straight out from the lodge to where they set up there ice shacks, we drilled a couple of holes each, I cut up the tullibee baited my hooks and tossed them down thinking allright first one in the water gonna catch the first one of the trip and my first laker ever. I was using a 3/8 oz white berkley power tube and a 1/2 oz white bucktail jig made from scratch by myself. All of a sudden I hear FISH ON!! and look over to see John with a fish on and landed a nice little 22 inch laker then I see scott fighting a fish as well but no fish for rodney yet. 2 hours gone by I think the score was john-3, Scott- 4, Rod-0. All of a sudden I hear "Rod your deadline" I run over set the hook and got about 2 cranks on the Shimano Stradic and the fish was gone. It was about a half hour later while jigging the bucktail i had a hit, lost him, he hit again, lost him, he hit again and I fed him some line tightened up yep still there and Wham!! I set the hook as hard as i could now i got him. I just landed the first Lake trout ever and boy was I proud all 21 inches of him. We released all the trout we caught that day with the total score being Scott-6, John-5, and Rod-1 it was a good start with 12 lake trout in 4 hours. We packed up and headed back to the lodge to meet up with the rest of the group. Everyone showed up shortly after having a decent trip to Reed We all got together and shared storries from the day everyone happy to hear I caught my first one. After supper we all got together and kicked in $20.00 each for the longest fish pot which was a total of $620.00 drank a few beers played some card games the odd game of crib and then off to bed. Friday morning im laying in bed wondering if anyone is up yet anxious to get out on the lake and catch another trout, then i hear the sound of a quad starting and another quad then a skidoo. I hear from the other room "Well time to get up boy's," we hopped out of our bunks got dressed for the day loaded up the skidoo with bait for the day another dozen pepsi and off to the snake pit which was the game room and our lunch and supper room. We got a couple cups of coffee and some toast and off we went, some of us decided to go to the spot we were the day before to try our luck out again, there wer5 of us here while the rest of the grup went off in search for the big one and the cash. We all got our lines in the water we were fishing in 40 feet of water it was about 7:30 am snowing a little but overall not too cold, I look over at scotty and see him bringing the rod tip down to the hole and wham sets the hook once, reels it back down and sets again, and then again, "now i got him". after a couple of minutes of fighting this fish we all came to the conclusing it was a good size so we all came over to help with landing of it after about 10 or 12 minutes it was coming up the hole and boy was it beauty. (go to pics section of website to view this fish) The first lake trout of the day a whopping 36.25 inches approximately 16-18 pounds caught on a 3/8 oz berkley power tube, gonna be tough fish to beat. Well after something like that it is time to celebrate so out comes the first pepsi at 8:00 am gonna be a long day. We all caught a couple fish and another nice 30 incher things started to slow down and it was time to meet at 7 mile hole for dinner. We ate dinner shared the morning stories caught a few more trout and it was time to go look for another big one so once again the groups were loading up and off to new spots. We decided to stick around for a couple more hours there was about 55-60 feet of water where we were and we were fishing right off bottom still using tube and bucktails. We caught some more trout but nothing even close to the big one yet, we decided to head back to where scotty caught the big one and fish there till supper it was about 5:30 I was out of pepsi the weather was getting worse so we headed in to the lodge. After all parties had been acounted for and everyone was in we feasted on a fabulous prime rib dinner with all the fixins cooked up by Bruce Tycholis of Irvings Catering and Food Company, Dauphin, mb. Again after a few games of cards watching the hockey game I packed it in around 11:30 looking forward to the next day. Again waking up to the sound of a quad engine it was time to go,some more coffee and toast and we were off, we stopped off at what we called 1 mile where scotty landed the big one which still had the lead in our little tourny. Fishing was a little slower there today so we didnt take long to pack up and try somewhere else, lunch was at okell's hole today and it was a 10 mile ride across the lake so we decided to go somwhere to close the gap. We went to what was the locals spot fishing in 50 feet of water on a hump in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't long fishing and Stan burdeniuk who had fought a fish for roughly 45 mins to an hour the day before but after getting tangled in 3 seperate lines spread out around him he got off was on to another nice fish. We reeled up all the lines close to stan leaving one about 50 ft away thinking it was gonna be okay, but it wasn't. "So here we go again" he said after a nice fight we had the fish at the bottom of the hole but could not get him turned into it. I looked down the hole and saw that the fish was snagged in the middle of the belly and the other hook which was mine was tangled around it was not helping wepulled him as far to one side as we could and hooked him with another hook closer to the front and it was a verry tense just trying to get this fish up the hole and I did not want to lose this fish for him. After 20 mins and losing part of ice scoop down the hole we got him out, but was he big enough? We placed him on the board and read out thirty, five inches, inch and a quarter short. We fished there till 11:30 caught allot of trout and headed over for dinner, sausage, smokies, chicken wings, and deep fried perogies. Wow i was stuffed, we fished here for a while and then i decided to go back to the locals spot and try there again. I caught one trout and one burbot and off we went to the spot where stan lost the big one the day before. There were six of us fishing off what i called Rock Island, we were in 30 feet of water and fishing was slow. By now the trip had been such a success it did not matter, the sun was hot and there was no wind and the pepsi was going down good I had to put on the sun block because it got just to hot on the face. I said "well is it time to move and try somewhere else" when i look over and my rod tip goes stright down the hole, thanks for the wonderfull round rod holders made by Valper there was no way the rest of the rod was going. I ran over picked up the rod set the hook once, twice, three times, and the boys called for "one more!" and a fourth, the fish did not like and he was off screaming line off the reel I looked up to the guys and said " reel up all the lines boys this is a big one." Everyone was up and reeling all the lines and gathered around me to coach me through it john started the clock, there was not much i could do I would reel in 10 feet he would take 20. All I could do while my hands shook my heart was pounding and my knees were wobbling is think to myself how much that $620.00 would be nice to have. I looked over my should for a moment to look at a quad driving in the distance when one of the guys slapped me and said "eyes forward nothing else matters watch the hole and land this fish, for that I thank him. After all said and done there he was coming up the hole 25 minutes later but I knew right away he wasn't big enough for the cash but plenty big for me. On the board he went as they read off thirty, four, and a half inches and a beautifull fish he was. A quick photo session and back in the hole he went to live to give another angler the joy he gave me and hopefully many more after that. Well it was time to head back to the lodge for supper and to find out if scottys was still in the lead, We got back to find out that one of the groups had caught a 36.5 inch pike and because it was for the longest fish he technically would have won but they decided to split it. Thats the kind of sportsmanship we all like to see, we had deepfried turkey and ribs for supper with scalloped potatoes and scallops fried in garlic butter. We all ate and talked and laughed wishing we were gonna be there for another day but knew it had to end, while allready looking forward to the next year.
