have been icefishing for pike 3yrs now, and can't believe the difference in their behavior to the winter months. Ist year, we tried different lures of sorts, and the all mighty smelts...no success. Last winter, I saw a guy on Buffalo lake using a home-made lure, he was having good success. I decided to make one. The idea behind these is similar to the Rapala Jigging lures. The one I based mine upon had a circular motion in the wate. So away I go to the shop, carving it, sanding, shaping...etc. After several hours of trial and error in the weighting process, I had something to take to the lake. Instant interest, little success. We had Jacks coming into that hole like nobody's buisness, but couldn't get the buggers to bite! After several attempts, I re-positioned the hooks, and it made a huge difference.
Although most looked at it, laughed a little, and said, "looks good, but it is too big!"
This thing is about 5" in lenght, but will glide 8' away from the shack, and slowly come back. At some points, we have had as many as 4 pike fly into the hole all at once for it.
Still have yet to land a huge one, I did have a large bugger on in Dec. He pulled line off like there was no tommorrow, and I fought him for 4-5min. After finally getting him into the hole, he spit the barbless hook out,GONE!
Was my fault, as it was getting dark outside, we had the shack lights on, Dad hunting for the net, me swearing up a storm, and both of us laughing our asses off. But the light o inside made the water look black-couldn't see him even as he approached the hole.
But I fished with that thing all summer, and everywhere I went that had Pike, I was catching.
Has anyone made their own lure before? Would like to hear how it worked, etc.
i will try to post a pic of this thing, if there is any interest, let me know-may be the type of thing you would want to try!
